Nadin Younes: Advancing Public Health Through Biomedical Innovation

“Science has the power to transform public health, and I want to be part of that change,” says Nadine Younes, a Ph.D. candidate at Qatar University’s Biomedical Research Center. Nadin’s work focuses on developing rapid diagnostic tests for Norovirus, Hepatitis A, and Hepatitis E—diseases that contribute significantly to global health challenges. These tests, she explains, are designed to provide “quick, accurate detection” and are adaptable for both clinical use and resource-limited environments. “By addressing these diagnostic gaps, we can better control outbreaks and improve health outcomes, especially in underserved areas,” she adds, emphasizing her commitment to impactful solutions.

Nadin’s journey into biomedical sciences began during her undergraduate studies, where she discovered the critical role diagnostics play in preventing and managing diseases. “I realized that a simple test could mean the difference between an outbreak spiraling out of control and containing it early,” she reflects. Her experiences, from volunteering in laboratories to working on high-impact projects, solidified her interest in infectious disease diagnostics. “Seeing how science could directly benefit people’s lives made me want to push the boundaries of what’s possible in this field,” Nadin shares.

Balancing the challenges of her Ph.D. program with personal life requires deliberate effort, but Nadine approaches it with a positive mindset. “I’ve learned that balance isn’t about perfection; it’s about finding what works for you,” she says. She credits her family’s support and her habit of setting small, achievable goals for helping her stay on track. “Some days are harder than others, but I remind myself that it’s okay to take breaks and ask for help. Small wins matter, and they keep me grounded.” Nadin also emphasizes the importance of self-compassion, saying, “Being kind to myself allows me to stay motivated, even during the most demanding times.”

Looking ahead, Nadin has ambitious goals for her research and the broader scientific community. “I want to create sustainable diagnostic solutions that are accessible to everyone, no matter where they are,” she explains. She also hopes to empower others, especially women, in science. “Mentorship is a big part of my vision,” she says. “I know how much having guidance can mean, particularly in fields where women are underrepresented. I want to create spaces where young researchers feel encouraged and confident to lead.”

Her advice to young women pursuing careers in STEM is both practical and inspiring: “Be confident and persistent! Don’t let fear hold you back from taking on big projects or leadership roles,” Nadin advises. She also highlights the importance of community, saying, “Surround yourself with mentors and peers who inspire and support you. Science thrives on collaboration.” Reflecting on her own journey, Nadin adds, “Every challenge is an opportunity to grow. Stay curious and trust in your abilities—you have the potential to make a difference not only for yourself but for the generations to come.”
