Salma Younes: Pioneering Skincare Sustainable Solutions and Biomedical Research

Salma Younes is redefining skincare and biomedical research through her innovative work on sustainable antimicrobial hydrogels. Motivated by the growing threat of antibiotic resistance, which could surpass cancer as a leading cause of death by 2050, she set out to create eco-friendly solutions. “I developed hydrogels using sustainable ingredients, free of harsh chemicals. They’re not only great for skin and wound care but also safe for the planet,” she explains. Her goal is to make skincare safer and more sustainable for everyone.

Her Ph.D. journey at Qatar University played a pivotal role in shaping her vision. “Working with a diverse and supportive team showed me how science and entrepreneurship are connected,” she says. Guided by mentors, Salma learned how to transform lab discoveries into real-world applications. This experience deepened her commitment to making science accessible and impactful.

A cornerstone of her research is sustainability. By replacing synthetic chemicals with naturally derived inorganic materials, her products are gentle on the skin and environmentally friendly. “This approach also helps tackle antibiotic resistance by reducing reliance on antibiotics, ensuring treatments remain effective now and in the future,” she notes. Salma believes sustainability is key to creating medical solutions that benefit both present and future generations.

Looking ahead, Salma is preparing to launch her hydrogel products, which go beyond skincare to include applications like tissue regeneration. “It’s exciting to see years of hard work turn into tangible solutions,” she shares. Alongside her innovations, she is passionate about mentoring young scientists, particularly women, encouraging them to see science as a tool for creating real-world impact.

Through her groundbreaking research and commitment to sustainability, Salma Younes is paving the way for a healthier, more innovative future. Her work exemplifies the power of science, along with the female touch, to address global challenges and inspire meaningful change for generations to come.
