Kareem El Shenawy: Art Raises Questions, Not Answers

Recently, the American University hosted a discussion session titled "Family Dialogues" as part of the MedFest Egypt forum. The discussions addressed the challenges and issues facing families and explored ways to improve communication and understanding within them. The session featured actor Ahmed Dash, director Kareem El Shenawy, Shereen Lewis, a psychological and educational consultant, Manal Eid, director of the Positive Youth Development Team at the “Family” project by Pathfinder International, and Catherine Medhat, co-founder of MedFest. The session was moderated by actor Salah Majed, who emphasized the importance of discussing the evolution of family dynamics in recent years and how to build healthy relationships or repair strained ones, with a focus on intergenerational relationships.

Catherine Medhat highlighted the family’s role as a primary source of support, noting that communication within families was not always easy in the past due to a lack of openness. However, things have changed over time, and challenges have increased, especially after marriage and having children. She added that motherhood has made her more patient in dealing with these challenges.

Manal Eid spoke about the changes in the family’s role under the influence of social media, which has become an integral part of family life, altering traditional rules. She also pointed out that today’s children are more self-reliant and knowledgeable.

Shereen Lewis stressed the importance of family as a safe haven and primary reference for children. She explained that dealing with the concept of divorce is extremely difficult, especially for children, and emphasized the need to focus on their mental health during separation stages, advising that the matter should be handled wisely to minimize negative impacts.

Director Kareem El Shenawy shared that his portrayal of families in drama differs as he aims to present true stories reflecting everyday life in all its diversity, avoiding idealized depictions. He stated, "Art doesn't provide answers; it raises questions. Through my works, I strive to present realistic examples."

Ahmed Dash discussed the evolution of his relationship with his parents over time, noting that as he matured, his perception of them changed. He began to see them as individuals rather than ideal figures, which eased his anger and opened up space for peace and dialogue between them. He added that art's primary role is to tell stories with honesty and realism, rather than offering specific answers or messages.

MedFest Egypt is the first short film forum in the Middle East and North Africa, established in 2017 to explore the relationship between cinema and health. It uses films as a medium to raise awareness of important health issues. The festival will be held from September 12 to 15 at the American University in downtown Cairo, bringing together filmmakers and doctors to present human stories to the audience and encourage discussions on sensitive topics, aiming to promote a more inclusive approach in society in Egypt and beyond.
